How much does a website cost for a small business in New Zealand?
If you’ve started looking into getting a website built, you’ve probably noticed the prices are all over the place. Some companies quote $300. Others quote $15,000. Same word — “website” — wildly different numbers. Here’s a straight answer, not a sales pitch.
The short version
- $0–$50/month: DIY on Wix, Squarespace or Shopify. You do all the work.
- $299–$1,500: A template-based or AI-assisted build from a small studio. Done for you, but working from a proven structure rather than a custom design.
- $3,000–$8,000: A custom-designed site from a small local agency, built from scratch for your brand.
- $8,000–$20,000+: Full custom design and development, usually for businesses with more complex needs — bookings, e-commerce at scale, integrations with other software.
None of these numbers are wrong. They’re just answering different questions.
Why the range is so wide
Three things drive the price more than anything else.
Who’s doing the design work
A template gets you online fast because the layout decisions are already made. A custom design means someone is making those decisions from scratch for your business specifically — that takes longer, so it costs more.
Who’s writing the words
Good copywriting is most of what makes a small business site actually convert visitors into enquiries. If a package includes someone writing your content for you, that’s real work being priced in, not padding.
What happens after launch
A $299 site and an $8,000 site might look similar on day one. The difference shows up over the following year: is anyone checking it still works, keeping it secure, helping you make changes? Or is it built and then it’s entirely on you?
What you actually need depends on your business
If you’re a sole trader or just starting out — a tradesperson, a freelancer, a small service business — you mostly need to exist online with your services, contact details and a professional look. This is where a $299–$700 package does the job. You don’t need custom illustration and a six-week discovery process to tell people what you do and how to reach you.
If you’re an established business competing on brand — a hospitality venue, a retailer with a distinct identity, anyone where the website is doing real marketing work — a custom build starts to earn its higher price tag. You’re paying for something that looks and feels like nobody else’s.
If you’re running e-commerce at any real scale, or need bookings, memberships or software integrations, the complexity (not the design) is what pushes the price up. That’s development work, not decoration.
Questions worth asking before you pay anyone
- How many rounds of changes are included before launch?
- Is basic SEO setup included, or is that a separate line item?
- What happens if you want to change something six months later — is there a plan for that, or are you back to square one?
- Is there a lock-in contract, or can you walk away if it’s not working out?
- Who owns the finished site? (It should be you.)
Where White Cloud fits
We build sites for small businesses and self-employed Kiwis from NZ$299 + GST, live in about a week, no lock-in contracts. It’s not a DIY builder — we write the words, handle the design, and set up basic SEO before you launch. If your business needs more than that, we also run ads and email marketing, priced separately so you only pay for what you actually need.
If you’re not sure which end of that range fits your business, get in touch and we’ll tell you honestly — including if the answer is “you don’t need us yet.”
